Jamaica’s newest award ceremony geared at celebrating women dubbed QORIHC (Queens of Reggae Island Honorary Ceremonies) was a major success in its 3rd staging. The event held on Sunday, October 28, 2018, at the Courtleigh Auditorium lauded some of Jamaica’s brightest, well-accomplished female stars in their areas of profession respectively who are usually “Behind the Scenes”.
Dr. L’Antoinette Stines receives her Award |
This year, the event opened with a stellar performance from L’Acadco (A United Dance Force) where we saw Dr’L’Antoinette Stine’s one of a kind dance style that fuses African, Chinese and Caribbean movements. This performance clearly depicts why she was this year celebrated as a QORIHC Honoree. It was after this performance, we were introduced to the three hosts of the evening — Well-accomplished Media Personality Mr. Francois St. Juste, Soyini Phillips, and Elaine Wint. Each host added their unique personality to each segment of the event respectively with a certain Je ne sais quoi.

Dorothy Cunningham |
The first Awardee of the night was 2018 Tribute Queen, Dorothy Cunningham who gave an inspiring speech about her life prior to acting, where all she did was work at the Jamaica Gleaner, then go back home at the end of the day only to do it over again. Dorothy then went on to become one of Jamaica’s most noted and accomplished female actresses for which she credits great Thespians like Ms. Louise Bennett-Coverly and Oliver Samuels as her mentors. Next, was a moving speech from QORIHC founder Laurell Nurse who spoke on the importance of the event and though she struggled to pull it all together, in the end, it came out well and is an event this is even bigger than what she envisioned.

The Guest Speaker of the Night was Cindy Breakspeare, Miss World 1976 who shared her life’s journey from Beauty Queen to Mother to Businesswoman, who in spite of everything she went through refused to “hide her light” under a bush! Cindy charged women in the audience to make peace with the past, forgive and move forward as if she did it, anyone else certainly can which was simply heart-warming and moved the audience to tears. Performances of the Night included Digicel Rising Stars 2018 Winner Monifa with her powerful rendition of Beyonce’s “Listen” that received the Carlene Davis and Tommy Cowan stamp of approval. Other performers included:
An exciting Fashion Show was added to the event and featured creations from Meline Fashions, Safidah, T &T Fashions and Neahlis modeled by the Caribbean’s most noted modeling agency, Saint International.

QORIHC 2018 was well supported and well received this year and will fast become a staple event in the Caribbean and within a few years will be one people from all over the world fly to attend similar to the BET or Soul Train Awards. With another successful staging in the bag, we are already anticipating year 4!
If everyone who reads our posts, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure.
