Jamaica’s very own Film Festival dubbed “Gatffest” was last Friday launched at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge at the University of the West Indies Mona.

The event, now in its 7th year staging proudly welcomed Filmmakers and those in the Film Industry from Jamaica, Barbados, Canada, and even Washington DC in attendance.

The theme this year — James Bond! This year’s theme was “James Bond” and each invited guest stuck to the theme and showed in their best bond girl attire inclusive of dramatic sparkly dresses and men in customized suits. Jamaican Veteran Media Personality Dervan Malcolm played host of the event where he introduced the speakers of the night. First, was Professor Ian Boxhill who spoke on the growth of the Festival and the University’s involvement in it and the ways it has positively impacted the Film Industry in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and Internationally.

The final speaker of the night was Professor Dale Webber, Principal of the University of the West Indies Mona who gave an informative yet humorous speech on the Jamaican Film Industry

“The Jamaican Film Industry is more articulate and fine-tuned — it tells the stories and perspectives of different people who experience many things. I am proud of the University’s involvement and will continue to give my support in the ways I can”

This was followed by the feature presentation of the night! Caribbean Films “Beneath the Surface” by the UWI Film Community and which speaks about the Coral Reefs in Jamaica and the way it’s impacted by pollution and other environmental factors and “Island Strong” Clish Gittenn. Both films were well received by the audience which then led to a Q&A session in the form of a panel discussion where the audience got to interact with the Film Makers.

This year Gatffest Film Festival is bigger and better! It features films from Columbia, Japan, and Africa just to name a few and spans to Montego Bay.
