Buju Banton recently released the song ‘Blessed’ from his upcoming album “Upside Down 2020”. The album was released everywhere on June 26. In the video, Buju begins by having a heart to heart with an elder who expresses how times have changed and how disheartening things seem in today’s world. Buju also expresses concern and emphasizes the need to ensure that the younger generation is kept abreast, here we see him have an exchange with the ‘grammy kid’, Koffee. He goes on to acknowledge the happenings in America as it relates to the protests against racism and police brutality; showing his support to the Black Lives Matter cause. The song’s intro is complete with Buju extending a hand of kindness to a young shop attendant.
Soon after the beat, a mixture of old school and modern reggae, that forces you to bounce and move along is heard, and Buju makes it clear that ‘we ago mek it’ despite the fight from those in authority and positions of leadership. He states that our fight has been long and despite all, God has our backs. That’s why ‘we bless’. He speaks on the constant uphill battle of trying to reach our goals and the injustice we face by those in power. We soon see dancers come into play, at the chorus. Dressed in all black, their movements deep, expressive, and explosive to match the energy of the beat and the heartfelt lyrics. Buju seeks to remind us that regardless of the fights he receives, regardless of the hardships of life, despite how long he has been fighting for a slice of the bread, he’s blessed by God. In the second verse, Buju’s lyrics are centered around self-development and not needing to the front for others to see. He also expresses the need to stay focused on your goals as well as investing in them.

Buju uses graphics from protests and local political rallies to express his thoughts, all the while the story follows the youngster from the shop, and it turns out to be his birthday. He rushes home after receiving a text that his mom is unwell. He ran out so quickly he left his wallet, this he expresses to the taxi driver who then lets him know that that’s okay; another act of kindness. On his way home the young man passes a younger boy sitting by the curb without shoes, possibly homeless. He looks on in concern before he rushes inside where he is met with a surprise. A surprise party that is, where he receives a gift; a new pair of sneakers. For which he is very happy. However, the scene ends with the homeless boy holding the new shoes; the final act of kindness. That is, Buju’s initial act of kindness has come full circle.
And this is what I think Buju wants us all to realize, that kindness goes a far way. This is what the world needs more than ever, each one reach one. Treating each other with love. Sharing our blessings … we were always taught to give and it will come back to you.
