The Great Resignation: How I Pivoted My Career in COVID

There is a worldwide shift happening that has been named “The Great Resignation”, and yes it is somewhat of a play on “The Great Depression”, as that is exactly what it felt like when the Pandemic hit.

This new phenomenon even has a hashtag #thegreatresignation .

It’s the concept that a wave of people have already or soon will be quitting their jobs. The hypothesis was first coined by Texas A&M Professor Anthony Klotz.

Due to the pandemic and many people having to work from home all over the world, it allowed people the time to think to see if the job they were in is worthwhile and they, resigned. Their resignation allowed other employees at the same companies to re-evaluate their circumstances and they too resigned which caused a snowball effect. The thing is, people are resigning because there are better options available to them that will allow them to live their best life!

In my own experience, I quit my job in February because it just did not suit me. I was at the company in 2019 when I made the professional shift to Digital Marketing after being a Blogger for almost a decade. I thought it would be a great way to showcase my skills and put them to good use to growing local companies here in Jamaica. Let’s just say great time wrong company as what started out as a dream turned into a nightmare. I really do hope my previous boss is reading this as he was nothing short of a miserable, disgusting man. I was always paid late, there was no sick or vacation days and the first year he didn’t pay us for two weeks in December and my Pay was also late. Imagine working all year round, then not getting paid for two weeks and being paid late for the rest of the month you worked. Throw in a little racism, mental mind games and modern day slavery and you had my situation. I was planning to resign March of this year but during one of the meetings I just got up and left and never looked back.

I went immediately into another job which was quite interesting but I could not find my footing or relate to it in any way. I must thank the wonderful team who took a chance to hire me and allowed me to still have money coming in as it did not work out. Again, I moved on and somewhere in between, I was called into an interview in May for a job I applied for in February. Can you imagine that? This was a job I had my eyes on for years and never thought I would get it because it was competitive but I still applied. I’ve been there since May 12,2021 (still in the probationary 3 month period) and I love it! It’s a Fashion company here in Jamaica and I am the Digital Marketing Associate, I’ve been setting and crushing goals, and because it is an adult non-slavery environment, I don’t have a racist boss breathing down my neck telling me I have to work at random hours.  Sometimes, when we take the chance to move on from situations that is no longer serving us, great things happen.

I shared a portion of my story because I notice The Great Resignation is catching on in Jamaica. There are so many people who have been changing jobs at an alarming rate as gone are the days when you would stay in a job you hated for 20 years just because you need the money. I am not telling anyone to get up and quit their job without a plan, but if you are in a job you hate where you are mis-treated and just feel “less than”, make a plan and start looking at your options. That can be as simple as taking a course online to learn a few more skills, then start applying to places you’ve always wanted to work at but have been to scared to apply.

It is also important to ask specifically for what you want and if the company or person is not able to meet the amount, move on and look elsewhere. Due to the Pandemic, 2021 is an expensive year and the best way to live comfortably, is to be able to afford the things you need.

If you are like me and was in a job you hate, now is the best time to start looking for another job that is better suited for you.

Let me know if you have changed jobs recently and what influenced your decision.
