The Devil Wears Prada turns 15 Since Premiering in 2006

Do you remember where you were 15 years ago? I was probably in High School doing my final exams anticipating leaving that place to enter “The Real World”. This was around the same time I watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time 15 years ago!! The movie premiered in Theatres across the world on June 29, 2006 and has been revered as one of the most Iconic Fashion movies to date!

The movie is centred around Andy, a young aspiring Journalism Graduate who moves to New York to “follow her dreams”, of being a hard-hitting journalist at a notable company. Unfortunately for her, the job she lands is one at Runway Magazine as an assistant to a ruthless Editor named Miranda Priestly.  Miranda is the biggest Editor in New York and has her finger on the pulse of all things Fashion and knows the power she holds and reminds everyone around her of it daily.

She is somewhat feared and revered in the office which is evident by the way people “fall into place” when she is about to enter, and how things must be arranged a certain way upon her arrival.  Runway is a Magazine for “Fashion People”, who wear the latest designer labels, have perfectly coiffed hair, make up is in place and they actually put time and effort into how they look. Andy is the total opposite of that and makes it clear she wants to be known for her smarts rather than what she wears. As the show goes on, she is tested and asked to do the most ridiculous things by Miranda which she surprisingly does, until she gets a make -over and really levels up her skills and knowledge of Fashion at the Magazine.

She loses her friends and boyfriend in the process who all hate their jobs and are happy to just have a job to pay the rent. I must admit I found this part of the movie disheartening, (though realistic), as they could have offered more support as they knew the industry and City Andy was in. There lies the question, who is the real Villain? Miranda or Nate her Boyfriend? Definitely, 100 % Nate!! Sure Andy was wrong for sleeping with that other guy, but let’s face it, he was a line cook at a job he hated and was just going through the motions.

Andy had to change parts of her appearance and personality to fit in and and also stand out and he should have been the strongest support system in her life. Ultimately, she grew up during this time and was now at part of the real world with real life issues and he was just the same.

This will forever be one of my favourite Fashion Movies and I try to watch it at least once a year whenever I feel discouraged — after all, If Andy can do it, so can I?

The Devil Wears Prada is not about the cruelty of the fashion world and the importance of staying true to who you are. It is about the necessity of the fashion world (including the cruelty of it) and the importance of adjusting who you are to meet its expectations.
