What is a Business Model Canvas?
The Business Model Canvas (BMC) is a strategic management tool to quickly and easily define and communicate a business idea or concept.
It is a one page document which works through the fundamental elements of a business or product, structuring an idea in a coherent way.
The right side of the BMC focuses on the customer (external), while, the left side of the canvas focuses on the business (internal).
Both external and internal factors meet around the value proposition, which is the exchange of value between your business and your customer/clients. In essence, the most important question you should ask is “What is the thing that your brand or business offers that is different from everyone else in your niche? This is definitely something you should think about at the initial stages of building out your brand as it can make or break you. Will you provide great customer service? Will you provide a fast turn-around time? Think about it and this will be your value proposition.
Why do we use a Business Model Canvas?
- To quickly draw a picture of what the idea entails.
- It allows us to get an understanding of your business and to go through the process of making connections between what your idea is and how to make it into a business.
- It looks at what kinds of customer decisions influence the use of your systems.
- It allows everyone to get a clear idea of what the business will likely be.
How to use it
Value Proposition:
The Value Proposition is foundational to any business/product as we’ve mentioned above!
It is the fundamental concept of the exchange of value between your business and your customer/clients.
Generally, value is exchanged from a customer for money when a problem is solved or a pain point is relieved for them by your business. For us here at Haute People, we are exposing International readers to the Jamaican Culture by providing high-quality services AND we are always professional in our interactions ( which is a pain point in Jamaica) and we always deliver photos + videos within a 24-48 hour time- frame.
If you are still not clear and need a bit more direction, it’s always good to ask yourself a few questions to help put you on the right path.
Good questions to ask when defining your business/product:
- What is the problem I am solving?
- Why would someone want to have this problem solved?
- What is the underlying motivator for this problem?
- How much will it cost to set up systems to solve this problem?
- Is there a learning curve involved?
We’ve added the Business Model Canvas of two popular Brands; Apple and Nike so you can see how to build out or fill in the relevant sections. While you can use these as guides to help with your own BMC, ensure whatever create, it is not a replica of another brand, but your own, it has to do with your business or brand.
If you’ve decided to start your own brand or business, be sure to spend time to do your due diligence and do your research to ensure you are creating something solid that will solve a problem. Always remember “the most successful businesses solve a problem or fill a gap”.
Tell us in the comments the type of business or brand you would like to create and if you already have, did you use a business model canvas?
