Jamaican Textile Designer

Shadae Henry is a 22 year old textile/interior designer that attended the Edna Manley College where she was awarded her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Textiles and Fibre Arts. She grew in Portmore, St. Catherine where she still resides today. She is now employed as a designer while still creating textile designs, mainly woven pieces in her free time.

HP: For those who don’t know, tell us about yourself?

Shadae: I’m 22 years old and I’m currently employed as an interior designer at a design firm here in Jamaica. I attended the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts where I majored in Textiles and Fibre Arts. I’m currently balancing my two loves – interior design and textile design.

HP: Please explain what is a Textile Designer and how you got started?

Shadae: To me, a textile designer has many different aspects to its title. The word textile can go as far back as a single fibre. These fibres can be transformed into anything – to create a pattern, a woven piece, decorative art or create any art form you can imagine. I have always been interested in decorative arts, but I didn’t see myself as a textile designer until I started my tertiary studies – where I only wanted to focus on interior design. I realised I could intertwine my interests of textile design and interior design.

HP: Is this something you always wanted to do?

Shadae: I knew I always wanted to do something associated with the arts. For as long as I can remember, I have always been a creative person. And that creativity only expanded, allowing me to see things differently and create things in ways I couldn’t even imagine.

HP: What is one thing you learned so far since being in business?

Shadae: I’ve learned that I should never doubt myself and that what other people see doesn’t even compare to what I see. As an artist it’s quite common to wonder if whatever you’re creating is good enough, but you have to learn to trust yourself and your abilities. Understanding this has allowed me to appeal to my clients’ interests and imagery, rather than letting my inner saboteur take over.

HP: Can you describe your Creative Process?

Shadae: Well I get inspired by a lot of things like architecture, art, colours, nature etc. So it’s important to feed that creativity. I try to sketch whatever’s on my mind – which is an upside to being a visual artist – you can visualize anything. Once I’ve gotten the idea of what I want to create, I organize all the materials I’d need to make my visions come to life. I also like to make maquette to get an idea of how the final piece will actually look and what I can change to make it better.

HP: Finish the sentence … “ I cannot live without my ….. “

Shadae: I cannot live without my support system. Being around other creative people has inspired me to keep my talents alive. They’re always there to remind me that I’m talented and I am capable of whatever I put my mind to. Being around people that support you in every way is truly a blessing.

HP: What are 3 words people use to describe you?

Shadae: Passionate, jovial and talented

HP: What words of advice do you have for people wanting to be a Textile Designer?

Shadae: I would say try to expand your talents and creativity. I have allowed my textile design background to feed my interests of interior design. Textile designers can work in many fields, such as: fashion designing, sculpture, weaving, interior designing etc. Everyone has their niche in this world so it’s important to know what category of your expertise you fall into, and to master those categories.

HP: Where can we find you? ( Website, Social Media, Contact # etc)

Shadae: You can find me on @ontedesigns on Instagram where I take pleasure in posting my woven pieces, interior designs and photographs. You can also contact me at ontedesigns@gmail.com for all inquires.
