“I created a service for people who look like me” were the closing statements of WiPay Limited CEO, Aldwyn Wayne.
The AC Hotel Kingston was the place to be Wednesday last for the event dubbed “WiDay”. WiDay is an annual event that marks the growth of WiPay Caribbean’s business in the markets that it operates. This is the first year the gala event was held in Jamaica since it’s launch 5 years ago in Trinidad and Tobago
WiPay Announces the Launch of a New Product
When we arrived on location, you can tell this was a technology company as screens and newspaper articles lined both sides of the walls which tells a story of important accomplishments since the company launched.
The energy inside was vibrant, high-tech, and innovative and you would think you were at an Apple event where they were about to reveal a major product release. It was not like any other event we have been to as it was engaging and the presentations brought us through a journey of simplifying the process of online transactions and how WiPay has made it accessible and inclusive for Caribbean natives.
In celebration of its 5th year Anniversary, WiPay will coincide with the launch of WiPay’s first consumer-facing product that will become a game changer in the financial technology space. We were given a glimpse of this product as explained by Wayne:
“It will be the first Digital tokenized Mastercard. It can be used at any POS in the world to accept payment. It will be distributed to 100,000 Jamaicans and can be used on Android Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay”.
The product has been in testing for the last three (3) months and will be released in the latter part of this year with the full rollout in 2023.
If this is what the future of online transactions look like, we are excited as an online brand based in Jamaica; moving money to local bank accounts has not been easy. It always includes a middleman or 3rd party that cuts into a significant portion of the total amount and you are left with crumbs.
Speakers of the evening included:
Aldwyn Wayne, Chief Executive Officer at WiPay Limited
Kibwe McGann, Country Manager for WiPay Jamaica Limited
Pete M Peter Mensah, Director of Payments at The HBAR Foundation
Dalton Fowles, Country Manager for Jamaica & Trinidad, Mastercard
Radcliffe Daley, President and Chief Executive Officer at First Global Bank
Invited guests included: Ministers of Government, Corporate Partners, Representatives from Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises. There were also celebrity sightings like Orville “Shaggy” Burrell as well as Public Figures like Khalilah Henry and local Influencers.
Be sure to keep up with WiPay on Social Media to learn about their latest products and services.
