One time for the Culture!
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was 90’s Sitcom Gold! It followed the life of “Will” a native of Philadelphia who had trouble in that city so his Mom sent him to live with his Auntie and Uncle in Bel-Air.
Since Bel-Air and Philly are polar opposites, Will had a bit of a culture shock to see how his family, his “Black Family” is living it up! There is a Butler, his cousins are in private school and are in a number of activities to keep them busy, they speak proper English (without slangs) and they seem to have the American Dream. Will comes to shake things up by simply being himself instead of fitting in and there are tons of shenanigans to keep him and his family busy and of course a belly full of laughs.
Fast-forward to about a year ago when Morgan Cooper put out a trailer for a modern re-imagined version called “Bel-Air” that caught the eye of Will Smith himself! Since then, things have been in the works behind the scenes and we now have news that the show has been greenlighted for two (2) new seasons on Peacock a new Streaming Site.
“Bel-Air” gets Green Light for Peacock Network
Will Smith announced a modern remake of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air will be turned into a two-season series in 2021, just in time to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary this month.
I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m excited to see a “Fresh Prince” in a world of Social Media and BLM. Though Uncle Phil was a Lawyer and went on a be a judge in the original version we rarely saw him at work. It would be nice to see how he would tackle issues today as a Black Lawyer and assisting another Black Male with who the system didn’t work. I’m excited to see Hilary on Rodeo Drive and Ashley trying to be cool and of course “uptight” Carlton and how today’s “Carlton Dance” would look !
I’m excited to see the new “Bel-Air”! Let’s hope they get it right and don’t stray too far from the original.
