There I was in the midst of publishing a Social Media post for one of my Freelance clients when I realised the post was stuck in oblivion. I turned to my trusted Google only to realise Facebook, Instagram AND WhatsApp were all down! I smiled to myself and thought.. this is like “Glam Media” all over again when the Billion Dollar company recklessely blew through all the capital they raised through funding and went out of business immediately.
3 Things to learn from the Worldwide Facebook, Instagram + WhatsApp Outage
This saw many Bloggers not being paid thousands of dalliers they earned for that month with zero dollars and no means of providing for themselves and their families. Since then, that has taught me to always have a “Digital Back-up Plan” that is somewhat foolproof just in case the Internet suddenly shuts down.
With the Communication + Social Media Trifecta go AWHOL unexpectedly today that left the world in a frenzy, I learned three things almost immediately
Always Plan Ahead
This is for my Digital Marketers and Social Media Managers … always plan your schedules/calendars one month in that back. This means since we are in October, you should be looking at planning your November content. I know this might seem a bit much, but you will save your self so much stress and trouble once content is planned ahead. If you are able to, schedule the posts for the specific days. Though Technology makes life easier to an extent, it also makes life more difficult to another extent! It’s unreliable and you never know when something can go wrong as the “Internet people can pretty much do anything without our permission.
Create a 360 Digital Marketing Plan
The concept of a 360-degree marketing plan refers to a marketing campaign that reaches customers at all possible points of contact. Successfully putting together such a plan is important because it enables you to maximize the chances of finding new potential customers and engaging them in a wide variety of ways.
“Don’t put your eggs in one basket” is the expression that is best suited for this point. There are a few Platforms that are considered “Top-tier” and people only post on those but completely neglect platforms like Pinterest and LinkedIn. Your Digital Marketing Plan should encapsulates as many Social Media Platforms that allows you to reach out to various audience segments. This post will be posted on LinkedIn, Twitter and Pinterest since that’s where most people are now most active. Try to also incorporate Traditional Media as much and best as you can because unlike Digital Media, it’s totally predictable.
Blogging is not Dead
Yup, this is for all the people who said Blogging is dead. I bet the first place you went when you realised these sites were down was on Google right? I guarantee more than 50% of the articles that came up were Blog sites. A Blog is still a great way to increase your Digital Footprints through Search Engine Optimisation. Believe it or not, you do not own the content you post on Social Media Platforms (read the fine print).
I own 100% of the content on the Blog since I’m hosted on Dreamhost and use WordPress as my CMS. Blogging is not dead ladies and gentleman and you need to get on board while you can.
Let’s use today as a lesson to always have a back-up plan, be vigilant and stay alert. I hope I helped at least one person today to live their best life … on purpose.
