They’re just the nice, normal neighbours next door.
And just like that “YOU” Season 3 was released on October 15, 2021 on Netflix and also “just like that”, we watched the entire Season in a day or two in my case!
Background on Joe
YOU stars Penn Badgley as Serial Killer Joe. Joe’s background is quite interesting and to say his childhood was troubled, is putting things quite mildly. He witnessed a man beating his mom so he did what any son would do in that situation and killed the man where he was sent to a “home” for Boys where he was teased and beaten mercilessly.
A Quick Recap of the Seasons
He like most Serial Killers, grew up into quite a handsome, toxic young man who developed an obsession with stalking women and literally kills anybody who gets in the way of his so called happiness. He dubs each conquest as “You” and states in a satirical way all the things he would do for ” You” and because of “You”. Just before I forget, there is a soundproof and bulletproof cage that he makes of glass where he keeps the victims he’s fond of and who he doesn’t necessarily want to hurt.
What would you do for love? For a brilliant male bookstore manager who crosses paths with an aspiring female writer, this question is put to the test. A charming yet awkward crush becomes something even more sinister when the writer becomes the manager’s obsession. Using social media and the internet, he uses every tool at his disposal to become close to her, even going so far as to remove any obstacle –including people — that stands in his way of getting to her.
In Season 2, he meets victim/love interest by the name of “Love” for which he forms an obsession only to realise later on, she’s just as crazy as him and has even killed a woman who got in the way just so she can be his #1. That Season ended with her finding out she’s pregnant and they get married and we are introduced to Season 3.
“YOU” Season 3 Has the World Rooting for a Serial Killer
In Season 3, Love and Joe and their baby Henry aka “Forty” trade sprawling Los Angeles for a “soulless wealthy suburb outside of San Francisco,” as described by Joe. The thing is, they both stick out like sore thumbs in the most awkward ways ever and Joe soon becomes obsessed with his Neighbour Natalie a Top Realtor in the Neighbourhood. She invites him over for a drink and kisses him but Joe fights the urge as he tries to remain faithful to his wife and leaves.
As the Season progresses, Love meets Natalie at a Social gathering and she drops hints that Joe she’s met Joe before and Love eventually puts things together and finds hidden box in her home with tokens from Joe’s visit to Natalie’s House. Love then purchases a property from Natalie to open a Bakery and lures her into the basement and kills her just like that! She tells Joe what she does and being the well- calculated “killer” he is, quickly devises a plan where he makes it looks like Natalie and another Neighbour was having an affair.
Just in case we gave too much away, we’ll stop there and just say, Love was the most hated character this Season as Joe was trying really hard to be faithful to her and not kill anyone, while she was being impulsive and killing people without a second thought.
We are also introduced to another side of Love that is selfish and completely self-centred and of course a Sociopath. According to her mother Dottie, she is a spoiled brat who always gets what she wants and does things simply because she is bored without thinking about the consequences of her actions and who she will hurt. In this Season, Joe is seen as somewhat of the good guy as he genuinely tries to keep his family together by protecting his wife and son, but Love is a complete mess. In this Season, Joe only killed one guy who we must admit was a total jerk, while his wife is out and about killing people and having an affair with a 19 year old minor. The relationship is toxic with Love as she is seriously broken and though Joe tries his hardest to fight all his usual urges and impulses to be good, things with Love can never be fixed.
In the end, Joe did what needed to be done which saw him fleeing to another country to get away from it all just so he can have peace of mind. We were all rooting for Joe to really come into his own and stop killing people and leave Love which resulted in a surprise ending.
