Emily in Paris Season 2 Is a Whole MESS

I am one of those people who prefer cable tv shows over Netflix, so whenever a show comes on Netflix, it has be captivating with an amazing storyline or it’s just popular. Emily in Paris is the later! Before I go any further, I must let you my readers know I watched this entire series painstakingly, so I can write a review for you. If you haven’t watched Season 2 yet, there might be a few spoilers so I will keep things as vague as I can.

Emily in Paris Season 2 Is a Whole MESS

Throughout the entire season, Emily has not grown as a character or person which makes no sense as she is the main character! She is still the same, selfish, entitled American who creates messes and tries to fix them while being totally annoying. We also learn that her French has not improved and she is has been held back in French Level 1. Emily is one of those characters that the writers force you to like, even though she is not likeable. Im trying to understand her age which I’m assuming is somewhere in her 20s, but she acts like a Teenager on a Summer Intern who has no idea what she’s doing or that she is a part of the real world. Let’s take that weird ménage à trois situation between her,Gabriel the Chef and Camille. She slept with Camille’s boyfriend (Gabriel), becomes awkward around her and instead of trying to come clean, she tries to “fix” the situation by playing match- maker to the two. She knew she had no interest in taking things further with him and continues to put herself in situations where she knows he will be and she also involves Mathieu, a client in her mess. She  could have admitted she was a bad friend to Camille and let her know she understands she is hurt and would like to explore her feelings with Gabriel. It’s almost an “have your cake and eat it too” situations where she is never accountable for her actions messes up people’s life and is always somehow the victim.

Relationships

Emily in Paris

I get that Emily is a pretty girl, but I think she gets involved with too many men too quickly. I see where the writers are playing on the Paris as the City of Love troupe, but sis needs to slow her roll. If she is going to do “Paris Right”, like Sylvie and the other’s have been insisting she does; she needs to focus on herself, her job and actually learning to speak the language before getting into relationships. I see this as lazy writing where the writers builds her as a character as the girl with complicated relationships, rather than building her as an actual character.

FashionEmily in Paris Season 2

Other than the writing, the Fashion is the second worst thing about the show. Based on the character, we can easily deduce that Emily is quirky, but the way the outfits are paired are simply atrocious. Emily also wasn’t established as a “Fashion Girl”, so I’m trying to figure out where she would get the time to go shopping for Designer digs like Chanel when we’ve only seen her go shopping once and how would she pay for all these when it was established in season 1 that jobs in Paris pay less but offers a better quality of life. Things are just not adding up in the department (pun intended).  The other characters like Sylvie as true “French lady” and Mindy her new friend dresses a lot better than Emily where their outfits are chic, trendy and classic and actually make sense.

Conclusion

Emily in Paris is a popular show on Netflix that offers escapism from the realities of life into the world of Emily, a quirky American Girl who takes a job in Paris after her boss become pregnant. The show is said to be one of Netflix’s most watched series in 2020, and is also the most annoying. The only person winning in this situation is Lily Collins who is an Executive Producer in Season 2.
