5 Things I’ve Learned Since Starting a New Blog

“A lot can happen in a year”

How often have we heard that expression and how often have we blinked and a year went by “just like that”? Certainly not literally, but I say all that to say this; “A lot can happen in a year whether or not you take action”.  One year ago,  (almost) I decided to not renew Haute People on Blogger as I wanted a fresh start on the Blog. Blogger is an older Blogging platform that has not seen any new changes since 2011, there are no plugins to help with SEO there is nothing new and my sight has been set on WordPress for the longest time. The thing is, I was scared to let all my hard work go on the old Blog as my heart and time were in that Blog.

There are so many fantastic memories attached to that Blog, namely being nominated twice for Blogger awards in Florida, Going to New York Fashion Week (twice), and covering numerous events here in Jamaica. But like all good things, that Blog needed to come to an end. Today, I will be sharing 5 Things I’ve Learned Since Starting a New Blog.

5 Things I’ve Learned Since Starting a New Blog

  1. Always go with your gut feeling: I’ve always had a feeling like the old site was the old me and I needed to create a site that is more suited to where I’m at. I’m no longer the girl who used her salary to purchase clothing or shopped on Fast-fashion sites like Forever 21. I had evolved into a 30 something-year-old who was now accountable for all her actions, I had bills and struggled with issues like anxiety and self-doubt and wanted to share all that with my readers to possibly meet them where they are in their own personal struggles and journey and offer help through my own experiences.
  2. It is never too late for a shower of rain: Society tells us that “life ends after 25” If you did not accomplish all the things you’ve set out to do in life by that age, forget it, just give up. Well, I’m here to tell you Society lied! I was 33 years old last year and I started over a Blog from experience that I was able to breathe life into. If I had listened to the naysayers, I would have still had that old Blog which literally felt like Flogging a dead horse. If you want to do something, go for it regardless of your age.
  3. There is beauty in a Fresh Start: As I mentioned above, this Blog feels like I breathed new life into it! I’m excited to Blog again as I truly feel like I’m adding value. When I started this blog, I also got the biggest campaign to date with LinkedIn, freaking LinkedIn! I wrote about starting over and how I used their platform to find a new job and they chose me as one of their Influencers/Bloggers in their “In It Together” Campaign. Sure I wasn’t selected for the International TV Ad, but to be noted on such a platform as a new Blog meant so much to me. It gave me hope and new ideas on how I want to scale and grow my brand.
  4. It’s all about timing: Who launches a new product or anything at all during a new disease? This girl! I launched this Blog during COVID-19 which was relatively new since I was home anyway and what better way to make use of my time. It just felt right and I’m one of those people who go off “feeling” and my feeling is always based on the timing. You will know when something feels right and when is the right time to dive in for you. Follow your heart and your intuition and always have a plan.
  5. Start where You are: I garnered several necessary skills as a Blogger and I was still lacking in several areas like Web Design and Graphic Design. I did not let that stop me as there is an amazing platform called Fiverr where you can pay a professional to do just about anything. I purchased a template and paid a guy to set up the Blog and also transfer a few of my best posts from the old site. It was not an easy transition as there were a lot of technical errors that delayed the launch but I still went ahead. Too often we delay our own success by focusing on the things we don’t have instead of using the things we do have.

Staring anything new in life can be scary-  there is always the fear of if you’ll make it or not and if it will be well received.  My advice to you is to go ahead and take the leap! What do you have to lose?
